3 Holistic Tips for Parachute Parenting

Be Amazing!

Be Amazing in a Holistic World!

Holistic parenting is necessary for this generation of kids who will need to ‘compete in a computerized, ecologically challenged, global world’.

3 Holistic Gifts a parent/grandparent

can bestow upon young people.

#1 Teach Discipline and Structured Habits

Make your bed, put your clothes away, do your household chores, prepare your lunch the night before, take time to complete all of your homework correctly, and hand it in on time, etc. etc.etc. is really “job training preparation” .

The earlier these good habits are instilled, the better!  It is very difficult as an adult to change not-so-productive habits learned as a child ~ like procrastination, and lack of attention to details along with lack of follow-thru.

Many kids in the rest of the world must work to help the family put food on the table, in addition to studying for a better life in the future global economy.

Therefore, they have already learned real life family/community collaboration, and how to plan their priorities, which are essential skills in a modern, holistic work environment.

Success = dreaming + follow-up action, adaptability, focus & hard work.

Steve Job’s goal for Apple was: not to be different, not to have more, but to be the best!

Steve’s mantra is that to be the best requires ongoing FOCUS.

Studies show that American kids could learn to FOCUS better if they were engaged in fewer activities at a time, and learned to choose what they would like to excel at ~ to enhance their future path.

And, as Maya Angelou suggests, kids need to learn not to just be normal followers, but to emphasize being their  own amazing self!

Kids must be aware of, and be comfortable with, their own natural abilities. This requires the courage to also acknowledge and overcome their challenges without giving up.

#2 Teach Independence, not Dependence

Follow the way of the Artemis mother -symbolized by the bear. The bear nurtures and protects her cubs. But most importantly, she teaches them how to fend for themselves.

Then she sends them off into the real world, rather than keeping them dependent on her. Experience and making mistakes is always the best teacher as long as one learns from their  mistakes, and doesn’t keep repeating them.

#3. Teach Relationship Building

In his book, The Future Belongs to Right – Brainers, Daniel Pink emphasizes that computers are taking over more and more of the left- brain skills which are taught in  the Western culture.

Therefore, young people need to understand how critical one’s personal impact on relationships with others is in a holistic environment.

This involves the art of compromise, collaboration, empathy, service to others, adaptability, creativity, communication, critical thinking and leadership  skills that cannot be replaced by a computer. That is to say…not yet!

It is about EQ, emotional intelligence and trusting your intuition at the gut level; not just IQ, intellectual cognitive ability  ~ which competes with the computer.

The computer can already beat champion players in the strategy ‘Chess’ and ‘Go’ games. And for quite some time now, the computer has been demonstrating that it can make faster, more consistent, and more accurate decisions than many highly paid stockbrokers, bankers, lawyers, etc.!

Robots can now be seen in hospitals, factories, assisted living homes, and corporate offices ~ this is just the beginning.

The I Ching teaches us that change is the natural order of things, and that life will continue to flow effortlessly if we have the right attitude, and continually adapt to taking the right actions, at the right time.

Yes, computers first started out replacing many blue collar – lower paying jobs, but now they are moving on to white collar Wall Street and Big Business professionals.

The question is,

are today’s kids being prepared  holistically for the future,

where the computer will be valued more than the human?
